10 Tips to Manage Your Employees More Effectively

Learn “how to” tips to manage your employees more effectively by interacting with them properly.

Many managers find it hard to “manage” their employees effectively. The main reason this happens is because they fail to interact with their employees properly. This article will address the 10 most effective techniques to put in place, which will ensure a smoother working environment and improved business operations.

  1. First and foremost, always be selective during the hiring process. Look beyond the specific job you need filled and look more toward the future of the company. Will the person you are considering hiring be able to help build the business as time goes on? Will he or she become an integral part of the business or just a body filling a position? New hires are an investment of both time and money. Therefore, they should be more than just knowledgeable in the basic duties of the job for which they are being considered. They should possess qualities that will make them a true asset to the business long-term. These qualities include but are not limited to, initiative, drive, integrity, and intelligence. No matter what position you are filling within you business, always look for the best candidate possible. This will enable you to offer advancement possibilities later and will lessen the need to replace employees for lack of performance or other related issues.
  2. You should always have a “second in command.” Everyone needs an assistant who is knowledgeable in the daily operations of the business. You never know when you may become ill or have some other type of emergency requiring you to be away from work. How is the business going to continue operating and who is going to manage the staff in your absence? These are key questions that can be answered by simply having a well-trained and trustworthy assistant. Let this person act as your shadow and train him or her on the ins and outs of the business. By doing so, you will have the assurance needed to travel on business trips, vacations, to get well or handle emergencies as they arise with confidence knowing the business will be fine in your absence.
  3. Delegate as many duties as you can which will give you the freedom to visit with each workstation regularly and be a more effective manager. However, do not give up so many duties that you lose a grasp on managing the business. In addition, do not approach employees at their workstations with an attitude of distrust such as, where is this or why aren’t you doing that. Remember do not bark out orders, instead, ask things such as, how are you doing today, how is this job looking, do you need anything? It is all about approach; breed a positive not negative atmosphere.
  4. Building a team is an essential part of any business running effectively. As a manager, hire the best, train them to your way of doing things and then trust them to do their job. Each employee should feel like and know that they are an important part of the business infrastructure. It takes a team of employees to run a business; one person cannot do it alone. Instead of barking out orders and constantly reminding everyone, “I’m the boss,” try a more people friendly approach, “We are all part of a team.” A team atmosphere also improves morale and your employees will feel included and needed rather than used and abused.
  5. Know the ins and outs of each employee’s job. How can you be and effective manager if you do not know how to do the job of those you are managing? Being a hands-on manager is a vital element to letting the employees know you are a team player working alongside them. This will show the employees that you are knowledgeable about the business, you are not above getting down and working with them, and it also ensures every job will get completed even in the event a position is vacant because you as the manager will be able to fill in if need be.
  6. Not only should you as the manger know the ins and outs of every position but you should also consider cross training your employees as well. Cross training staff will give you a backup to go to in the event someone is sick or if a position is empty which will enable the business to continue running seamlessly. This will also give way to easier transitions and internal promotions.
  7. Communication is another key element of managing your employees effectively. Regular staff meetings and briefings will keep everyone up to date on the business and offer question and answer sessions to make sure everyone understands what is expected and how jobs are prioritized.
  8. Take pride in the business but do not be egotistic. Send a message to your employees by taking pride in the business and the product or services you produce however, do not be pompous, arrogant, or an egotistical know-it-all. Employees will often emulate their manager. Give your best, demand their best, but do it in a professional and personable way and with a smile.
  9. Every business should have a suggestion box. Whether you implement employee suggestions or not, giving them the freedom to express their ideas and opinions will make them feel more like an integral part of the business. Who knows, you may come away with some great ideas to improve efficiency, your product line, customer service, or even your bottom line. Employees will also be more willing to participate if there is an incentive included if their suggestion is used such as a small monetary award, or a gift certificate.
  10. Reward your employees with much deserved bonuses. You have hired the best, they have worked hard, and the business has done well so make sure to appreciate the efforts of your employees. Everyone likes to feel needed and appreciated. One of the best ways to build loyalty within your business is to say thank you and show appreciation for a job well done.

If you are looking to improve the operations of your business, you should consider using these 10 tips to manage your employees more effectively and then watch as your work environment transforms into a smoother more integrated pace.
